Adapted physical activity (APA) is a cross-disciplinary body of practical and theoretical knowledge focused on disability, the different levels of functioning, activity limitations, and participation in physical activity, active leisure and sport. It is a service delivery profession and an academic field of study that supports an attitude of tolerance and acceptance of differences, advocates access to active lifestyles and sport, and promotes innovative and cooperative service delivery, supports, and empowerment. Adapted physical activity includes, but is not limited to, physical education, sport, recreation, dance, creative arts, nutrition, medicine, and rehabilitation. The major focus is placed on persons with disabilities or persons with functional limitations due to various reasons including ageing.
The Master program “Adapted Physical Activity and Sport” has been running since 2004 and up to now more than 240 Bulgarian and international students acquired their master degree in this scientific field.
The program is offered in two forms – full time and part-time of study and in two languages of instruction – Bulgarian and English. Both forms are granting 60 ECTS in total. Study program consists of obligatory and elective theoretical courses related to fundamental knowledge in the field, including the latest trends of full inclusion and application of universal design in sport. Part of the theoretical courses is focused on inclusive physical education. Practical courses include various adapted sports but major emphasis is placed on outdoors where students have the opportunities to acquire and improve their water sports skills in open water swimming, rowing, kayaking, rafting and sailing. The program also offers the opportunities for the students to apply their skills in inclusive sport camp environment and to work closely with children and adults with physical, sensory and intellectual impairment.
Master students are having the opportunity to carry out research activities in this area related to children’s and adults’ engagement and inclusion in physical education, physical activity, recreation, and sport.
Graduates of this program are highly competitive in the current field of inclusive sport and physical education labor market and can apply their knowledge, skills and competences in school, sport clubs and sports administration.
