Karlos Nasar Named No. 1 in Europe

Bulgaria's top athlete Karlos Nasar was also named “Best Weightlifter in Europe” for 2024. The announcement was made at the beginning of the continental championship in Chișinău, Moldova, where the most successful Bulgarian athlete of the past year will compete in a new weight category – up to 96 kg. The world record holder in the 89 kg category received yet another recognition – this time in the ranking of the European Weightlifting Federation and the European branch of the International Sports Press Association.

2024 has been the most brilliant year so far in the career of the student at the “Vasil Levski” National Sports Academy, who became the first Bulgarian to win European, World, and Olympic titles within a single calendar year. Nasar also set world records in both lifts – snatch and clean & jerk – as well as in the total in the 89 kg category.

In the “Best Weightlifter in Europe” ranking for 2024, he is followed by Dadash Dadashbaili (Azerbaijan), Roberto Gutu (Germany), Marin Robu (Moldova), and others. At No. 10 is three-time Olympic champion Lasha Talakhadze, who has retired from competitive sports and is now president of the Georgian Weightlifting Federation. Talakhadze had ranked No. 1 three years in a row since the poll's inception in 2021.

At the European Championship in Chișinău, Bulgaria is represented by 12 male and female athletes. The competition in the men’s 96 kg category is on Saturday (April 19), when Karlos Nasar will also compete.
